There is a beautiful story behind it — One day, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati held a competition between Lord Kartikeya and Ganesha and “Shiva declared, "Whoever circles the entire universe three times and returns first will be declared the greatest and will be worshipped before all others."

—He was created by none other than Indra and the Devas with one nasty purpose: to disrupt the prayers and rituals of sages and devotees. Every time someone tried to perform a yagna or any sacred act, Vighnasura would bring chaos, making sure nothing was completed.
Frustrated and helpless, the sages turned to the one deity who could truly help—Lord Ganesh. Moved by their prayers, Ganesh decided enough was enough and set out to face Vighnasura.
What followed was an intense battle! Vighnasura threw everything he had at Ganesh, but let’s be real—who can outsmart the lord of wisdom? With his divine power, Ganesh overpowered the demon, leaving him with no choice but to surrender.
Defeated and humbled, Vighnasura pleaded for mercy. And Ganesh, being the compassionate deity he is, didn’t destroy him. Instead, he gave the demon a choice:
1. Stop troubling innocent devotees. From now on, he could only create hurdles for those who act with malice, dishonesty, or bad intentions.
2. Serve Ganesh forever and work under his command.
With no other option, Vighnasura agreed, bowing down to Ganesh. And from that day onward, Ganesh became known as Vighnaharta—the remover of obstacles. So from that day we all turn to Lord Ganesha before starting anything important!
