It’s mentioned in the Puranas that if anyone observes fast on this day, they can get liberated from their sins and enjoy the great benefits of a fulfilling life.

Bhadravati, living on the banks of the Saraswati river, was ruled by the capable Chandravanshi King Dyutiman. The king was religious, wise and holy. There was also an extremely wealthy merchant living in Bhadravati called Dhanapala.

He had five sins named Sumana, Sadbuddhi, Medhavi, Sukriti and Dhrishthabuddhi. Drishthabuddi was involved in miserable and sinful acts like gambling and indulging with prostitutes, due to which he wasted a lot of his father’s wealth. Knowing this, his angered father Dhanapala expelled him from his house. Dhrishthabuddhi was now abandoned by the prostitutes, as he had no wealth or any kind of ornaments he had inherited. He started stealing money from the citizens and once got caught and threw it out of the kingdom’s boundaries.

He got irresistible from his hunger and thirst; he started eating animals and was in a very bad state. Once in the month of Vaiskah, he was wandering and reached the ashram of Kaundinya Muni. The wise sage there was taking a bath in the Ganges River and was arriving near Dhrishthabuddhi.

As he was wet, some drops of Ganges fell on Dhristhabuddi that miraculously helped him to regain back his senses and know what miseries he was committing. With folded hands, he bowed down to Kaundinya Muni and asked him to help him get relieved from his miseries. The sage told him to observe the fast on Varuthini Ekadashi and guided him for all the rituals or rules he should follow.

Agreeing to the sage’s advice, Dhristhabuddhi observed the fast and got free from all the sins he committed. Later on, he was also blessed with the place in Lord Vishnu’s abode.

Rituals You Must Perform On Varuthini Ekadashi

The day before Varuthini Ekadashi, on the 10th day of the Krishna Paksha, one must clean his teeth properly in the afternoon and have supper at sunset hour.

On the day of Varuthini Ekadashi, have a bath in the pure water; you can put Ganga Jal into it.

It’s also said that while bathing, the person must smear mud on his or her body, praying to the mother earth.

• Worship Lord Govinda and offer Bhog to the deity, including flowers or other things too that please the divine.
• Light a lamp or diya, chant or sing praises of Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings.
• After the prayer, the devotee should offer water at the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu and request the Lord to eat the prasad or the bhog.
• To garner the full merits of the fast, the faster must drink the jal that was offered to the Lord.
• One also must stay awake in the night in full consciousness and, if possible, can play musical instruments too throughout the night to please the deity or for your own self-fulfillment.
