Pamochani Ekadashi is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar and occurs on the 11th day of the waxing moon, which is called Ekadashi. The term ‘papchomani’ means ‘destroyer of sins’ and Papankusha means the axe that cuts down the sins.
It’s a vrat that is kept to please Lord Vishnu. So, the devotees observe this fast so that they can attain liberation from their sins and begin their path to purity, worshipping and praying to the deity.
There occur two ekadashi every month; one is the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi (new moon), and the other is the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (full moon).
So, there are 24 Ekadashi in a year, and this one comes between the festival of Holi and Chaitra Navratri and is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the Chaitra Month, on which the birth of the universe took place.

Let’s get to know more about this fast and how it leads one to the path of liberation and Moksha.
Vrat Katha Papmochani Ekadashi
Papmochani Ekadashi has a strong history from ancient times in Hindu mythology. It is said that once Rishi Chyavana lived with his son Medhavi, who possessed bodily strength and beauty.
However, he always used to remain immersed in extensive meditation and also prayed to the deity that kept his body and mind pure.
Watching Medhavi’s strong dedication towards God, King Indra could not bear his worship and sent the heavenly beauties to distract him, called Apasaras.
The sole purpose was to break Medhavi’s meditation so that he would not get blessed with spiritual bliss later on.
After days, an apsara named Manjugosha entered a hermitage that was near Medhavi and started singing the songs in a melodious way. Medhavi felt drawn to her, and his meditation came to a standstill.
A cupid also shot an arrow towards Medhavi on the orders of Indra to imbibe pleasure-seeking feelings in Medhavi.
Ultimately, Medhavi fell in love with Manjugosha, which washed away all the purities Medhavi attained by doing the meditation the long way. He got so much into her that he even could not realize the passage of time.
Years later, Manjugosha told Medhavi that he should leave her as a lot of time had passed. Medhavi came back to his senses, realizing that all his fruits of meditation were ruined due to the illusionary trick of Manjugosha. Angered by her act, he cursed her to become the ugliest woman in the universe.
Medhavi also apologized to his father, Rishi Chyavana for committing the act, losing his worship after a woman. However, his father calmed him down at that time and asked him to observe Papmochani Ekadashi, with which all his sins would be cleansed and forgiven with the divine grace of Lord Vishnu.
Also, he advised Manjugosha to observe the vrat. As a result, both of them got their sins forgiven and started a life of purity free from materialistic and worldly desires.
Now, we will dwell on how Papmochani Ekadashi helps in attaining salvation, moksha, and also inner peace:
