Saraswati
Goddess Saraswati is the consort of Lord Brahma, one of the Gods in the trinity. Goddess Sarawati is the presiding deity of knowledge, learning and various art forms. She is also known as Vagdevi and is the ruler of speech. In Hindu tradition, before starting any auspicious work, it is customary to offers prayers to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati. In Sanskrit sara means “essence and swa is “self”. Hence the essence of the self is known as Saraswati. She is worshipped by children and people who want to acquire knowledge and wisdom.

Depiction of Goddess Saraswati
She is depicted with four hands holding a rosary, Vedas, and a Veena. She is always represented in white clothes. White is the symbol of purity. She is compared to flowing water and hence she is the Goddess of wisdom and knowledge. She plays the ancient instrument veena depicting harmony surrounding the nature. she sits on a white lotus which depicts that she is rooted in Supreme reality. She is always shown in white clothes which symbolize purity.
Two swans are seen to the side of Goddess Saraswati. Swan is supposed to distinguish milk from water. It is known to have the power of discrimination. She preaches her devotees to discriminate between good and bad and lead a pious life.
Goddess Saraswati is the daughter of Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva. The name of Saraswati River is mentioned in the Rig veda. Even today, Saraswati River is believed to be flowing underground.
Celebration
Basant Panchami: In North India, Goddess Saraswati pooja is performed on Basant Panchami, which is usually
in the month of February. Books are placed near the idol of Goddess Saraswati and pooja is done.
In South India, Saraswati Pooja is performed during the Devi Navaratri festival. On the day of moola nakshatra, Devi Saraswati’s idol is installed and worshipped. Several homams and poojas are performed. All musical instruments are kept near the photo or idol of Goddess Saraswati and prayers are performed.
