Shattila Ekadashi is also popular as Tilda ekadashi or Sattila Ekadashi. Commonly it is observed in the January month through the fading phase of moon. Same as all other Ekadashi this is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu. As per Hindu calendar it is celebrated on 11th day of Magh month in north regions of India. The origin of the name Shattila took place from “til” which means sesame seed. Bathing with the sesame seed mixed water is considered highly auspicious and beneficial.

History of Shattila Ekadashi

Once there was a lady she was religious and devoted. She is enough rich and performs all Ekadashi Vrat. On the very day of Ekadashi she fed to poor people and Brahmins with clothes, jewelry and many other items expected grains and food. One day on Shattila Ekadashi Lord Krishna turn into a beggar and went to the lady. After that Lord started begging her for food, she agreed to feed him with food but only on a condition. She placed the condition for offering food that he has to tell his ‘gothra’. Nonetheless beggar continued to ask for food; angrily the lady placed a ball of clay into the bag of beggar. He blessed her and walks away.

The lady was surprised to see all items that she cooked were turned into clay. Everything vegetables, rice and fruits changed into clay. Thus the women become hungry and his wealth was started reducing day by day. Now, she do not have anything to feed herself, then she started praying to Lord Krishna. Lord appread in her dreams and explain her all the thing and acknowledege her that biggest donation is food and grains which she was not offering.

The Lord informed her that if she observes Shattila Ekadashi and keep fast on this day all her misers will definitely sought out and she will become rich again. After the day Shattila Ekadashi come into being.

What are the rituals of Shattila Ekadashi?

It is a ritual of Shattila Ekadashi to bath with the sesame seed mixed water and to apply the pack made of sesame on face. Perform ‘Havan’ with sesame. If the individual drink water mixed of sesame and eats food made up of sesame gets rids of from all the sins of past and present.

What is the ‘Puja Vidhi’ of Shattila Ekadashi?
