icon2Goddess Lakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is the presiding deity for all kinds of wealth and prosperity. She is worshipped in eight different forms like Vidya lakshmi for studies, Vijaya Lakshmi for success in any job or venture, Santana Lakshmi for children, Dhanya Lakshmi for abundant crops, and Soubhagya Lakshmi for a happy and prosperous married life.

Goddess Lakshmi is depicted as a woman with golden complexion and four hands. She has a lotus as her seat. She holds a lotus bud which is associated with purity, fertility and beauty. Four ends of human life, righteousness or dharma, desires or kama, wealth or artha, liberation from birth and death cycle or moksha.

Gold coins seem to be flowing from her hands. It suggests that whoever worships her, will gain wealth and prosperity. She is shown as wearing red embroidered clothes. Activity is symbolized by red colour and prosperity is indicated by the gold lining.

Two elephants are seen standing on her either sides spraying water. It indicates that if one follows dharma and are governed by purity and wisdom, it gives spiritual andmaterial prosperity.

Origin of Goddess Lakshmi

Once devas and asuras wanted to attain immortality. It is said that amrit or the nectar could be obtained by churning the ocean. Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma or tortoise and a mountain was placed on the back of the tortoise as the churning pole. Vasuki, the serpent was made as a rope to churn the ocean. Several divine objects emerged from the ocean. Among them the Goddess Lakshmi also emerged. She is believed to have existed always. She manifested into a form through Goddess Lakshmi. She is said to be the sister of moon as moon also came out from the ocean during the churning of the ocean by devas and asuras.

Various names

Goddess Lakshmi is known as Padma, Jalaja, Sridevi, Manushri, Padmapriya, Padmakshi, Padmahasta, Padmasundari, Vishnu Priya, Shreya, Kamalika, Kalyani, Nandika, Vaishnavi, Narayani, Samruddhi, Bhargavi etc.

1.Lakshmi Pooja: Shodasopacharas are performed with the suggested materials which is followed by 1008 Lakshmi namavali and Sri Sooktam. This pooja is done in your name and with your specific sankalpa.

2. Lakshmi Kubera Homam: Kubera is known as the treasurer of Goddess Lakshmi. Worshipping Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi brings financial prosperity. It is an elaborate homam. Ganesha pooja and kalasha pooja are done and later Dasa Dikpalaka and navagraha homam are performed. Recitation of lakshmi Moola Mantra and Kubera moola mantra are done.

This pooja is done in your name and with your specific desire or sankalpa.

3. Lakshmi Sri Sookta Homam: It is performed by four pundits and Lakshmi Namavali and Sri sooktam are performed 1008 X 4 times. It is followed by a homam. A honey dipped lotus flower is offered to the Goddess.

Specific homams for Dhana Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi,Vidya Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi are also done and the costs are the same as above.
